I am thinking I might have to agree with Nathan , it possibly could be a Grey Teal ( still not sure why his head is still so dark though), only because I have only seen 1 Chestnut Teal ( male) before so they aren't as abundant as the Grey Teals. It makes you wonder
!

Male Chestnut Teals have an eclipse plumage much like Fairy-wrens... and the slight metalic/black sheen to the head may indicate an eclipse male. Even if I'm wrong, either way it is definitely a Chestnut Teal (male or female). Usually, hybrid ducks are boldly obvious. I've never seen a hybrid teal/black duck before but if there were, you would still see faint face stripes from the PBD as it would be a dominant gene.

Sorry, I'm 500% certain it's a "female Chestnut Teal",. No doubt . I will find some photos with both of them in the same photo. Some of the most seen birds on my local lakes, trust me.

I just made it a bit darker, your photo was shot into the light, that made the bird look dark. The next photo is a male and the female, so make up your own mind. I have posted countless photos of both sexes over the last years, some even yesterday
even if you think it could be a male eclipse, compare the pattern on your bird's wings, exactly the same as on my female.M-L
