My resident Shrike Thrushes have decided to take over an old Blackbirds nest in the carport.
Problem is I'm trying to sort the van out for 5 weeks in the top end so every time I go out to do things I disturb them . Hopefully a week at work will let them settle .
Beautiful! Clever little Shrike Thrush, no hard yakka & and what a lovely well sheltered nest to "borrow"
too. It always amazes me how some birds seem to choose the "busiest" spots. I was walking in the local park last week when a glob of bird poo spattered just in front of me, looked up - as you do because you really want the next one to land right in your eye
- and there was a Little Wattlebird tail peeking over the side of a nest, only 2-3 metres up. Out of all the hundreds of trees in the park, they chose to build a nest in a branch above the main walking/jogging/everything path - which also has hundreds of High School kids walking/skate boarding/riding bikes up and down it morning and afternoon to & from school. Go figure? You may have to set up Shrike-cam while you're away narly, to get those little one shots.

I won't be around for the birth as I take off for 5 weeks in Darwin on Monday , hopefully the babies might still be around when I get back .
Neil
Cute little guy. :)
Pity you'll be away, but hopefully you get to see some action. :)
I'm not sorry about being away , I'm hanging out for it
they probably stand more chance of surviving without me disturbing them . Be interesting to know how they react when the van's gone as it would be a major part of the environment as it is now . I might take a couple more pics showing the overall situation.

Very sad day , found a dead shrike thrush in my backyard today . Don't know if it was one of the adults that nested in the carport or one of their offspring.

Bad news, Neil. Maybe it was a natural departure.

Oh no Neil. One of natures mysteries by the sounds? Unless it impacted with a car or window then came to rest in your backyard? I'm out of ideas, other than those already covered by shoop & Shorty. Very sad to hear though regardless of the cause
