Kingfishers again

Here are some photos of the 'orange' belly kingifisher , digging a new nest entrance with its white-bellied mate.

Wow, I have never seen anything like it (but then again I don't get outside my garden a lotsad) The nest looks like something ET would live in. Can you tell me a bit more about it please?

The nest? what do you want to know Araminta? lm no expert ....

lts a live termite nest on the northern side of a eucalypt [?] tree that is about 15m tall. approx 10m off the ground.  lts made from termite 'dust' mixed with saliva l suppose.

the kingfishers have already raised one young this season  , it left the nest about 3weeks ago.

the 2nd entrance they are digging faces directly due east.

Oh wow! now I know why there is holes in these, didn't think it would be from a bird nesting. Great photo's Barney

WD... the kingfishers nest is 20m from shack. lm still confused as to what species they are. one has all blue back , whilst the other has blue wings and turqoise back. in my old Slater book they could be forest or sacred kinfishers. l dont have the skill to correctly identify yet.

l am going to make a blind tomorrow , to get closer , and use higher shutter speed.

think lm becoming a bit obsessed with these birds. they are wonderful creatures.

Ahahaha... Got to love the falling shot, then it obviously remembered it had wings and flew off like nothing happened.

Yes they are lovely birds and fascinating to observe ... Good luck with the blind.

I'm only a beginner with birds so I can't help you on the ID, except to say that from previous discussions here I understand that there can be considerable variation in colour for the scared kingfisher and the bird books have to give one representative illustration which cannot capture all those variations.

This site has photos of Sacreds and may help with the ID... http://www.mdahlem.net/birds/14/sacrking.php
