Spotted this little guy in once in our back yard and once on the edge of our dam. Have never seen one previously and was wondering how common they are?

Hi rbuddy, it depends on where you live and the time of the year. There is a lot of information on BIBY if you click onto the link.

Beautiful looking birds, their beaks are amazing. You're backyard & dam must be a fantastic environment if this little guy is appearing rbuddy!

Hi M-L
We're at Mooloolah Valley in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and this image was taken a few weeks ago.
Thanks Annie. Our dam levels are quite low and the Snipe was using its long beak to forage around the water's edge.
rbuddy I noted your location and thought that you might be interested to know that your Latham's Snipe's cousin the Australian Painted Snipe has been sighted at Bli Bli http://eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Birdline=7
btw - I know that they are different families but I wanted to use the cousin term

Lovely photo of the Snipe, those things are so hard to ge close to and their plumage is fascinating.
I didn't notice those Parklakes Wetlands sightings until the day after I went home from the Sunshine Coast.
sounds like a nice place to take it all in.
See it! Hear it!

They are such unusual and interesting birds. Hope to see its 'cousin' one day!
Have to own up to not having been there myself!
