From the look of the beak it could be a finch, but I can't find one like this in my books.

Looks like a juvenile Crimson Finch according to Simpson & Day field guide. My younger brother identified it!
I think he is right, I never looked at the juvenile colouring. Thanks to you both!
Great photo. I'd agree with Crimson Finch. Not obvious at first, but that tail is distinct. Lorne
