Definitely a bird? I'm thinking a possum's dray. Lorne
Looks like a birdnest to me. I don't think a possum would place each grass stem so carefully. Maybe something like a thornbill.
The photos are last years nests and when they fell with the dead palm flower stalk I tipped out the contents. It looked like very dried small bird poo- little wiggles. I looked in the Morcombe field guide and some of the finches and mannikins build similar nests. The nest is quite exposed during the day& night- hanging off the side of the palm trunk, no fronds around only above and the entry hole is quite small. It seems to be made from bits of the Livistona palm near by. Pretty sturdy though, this years model has survived a couple of small cyclones. Last year there were two nests. This years nest is still up the palm but looks to be a lone one. I've hung around in the garden with a cup of tea waiting to see what enters but have not seen anything to date. Either they're finished with the nest for the year or I'm not spending enough time in the garden.

Finches do make nests like that, in my area firetail finches. Their nests are a bit smaller, but the same grass construction with a round hole.
