That is a Hardhead.
Hardheads are Australia's only true diving ducks they feed in deep water so if you watch them you might see one dive.
and more particularly that is a male Hardhead as he has a white eye and the female has a brown eye

Many thanks. I've just googled it and discovered it is also known as White-eyed Duck (Aythya australis). Might keep that up my sleeve for the photo challenge for "W''.

Just be careful as White-eyed Duck is not the 'common name'; it is the old or superceded common name.
