Hello everyone! :)

Hi my name is Daniel, I'm 15 yo and from NSW.

I like Computers,  Martial arts, Dinosaurs and birds.

So I've always loved dinosaurs, and after discovering that birds descended from theropod dinosaurs, it has made me share that love with birds.

I now always love seeing the birds that come to my backyard.

My favourite of these are:

Willie wagtails

Red wattlebird

Red-whiskered bulbul

Others that I also like (but not as much as the above):

Indian Mynah

Common Starling

(These are basically all the birds that come, the last one to mention is the magpie which I don't like that much, but at the same time don't have a problem with; Well except it does scare away the other birds.)

So yeah! Thats me :)

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to BIBY!

They are some interesting birds in your backyard, especially the Red-whiskered bulbul - I haven't seen one of those.

I'm a fan of the Wille Wagtails (and their curious cousins the Grey Fantails) too. They have such courage for a bird their size.

Cheers

Hi Daniel, and welcome!

There are some nice birds in your garden. You will find, the more you look and observe, the more you will notice.Like Tim, I haven't seen bulbul eithercrying

Do you have a camera? Will you post some photos? If not, it doesn't matter, you will get a lot of pleasure out of simply watching.

Hope to hear more from you soon.yes

Yeah no problem! They come about 1-2 times a day though, not as much as the other birds. I'm pretty sure its always the same pair, they are eating from the same tree; a berry tree :P They're incredible flyers. I'll be sure to take a pic next time I see them ^_^

These beautiful critters around us, believe it or not descended from theropod dinosaurs :) !!

Hi Willskrills. You might want to browse the posts on the Bird-friendly Gardening sub-forum to get an idea of the sorts of things you can do to attract native birds to your garden.

Thanks, i'll try that.

Hi Willskrills, about the cockatoos, if any of your neighbours(?) is feeding them, try to discourage them from doing so. Once they stop coming, you will find smaller native birds will be brave enough to returnsurprise

That and, as Woko says, planting lots of native shrubs and grassesyes

Good luck,M-L

That's a shame, Willskrills.

Have you thought about growing native shrubs in pots? That way they're yours to keep if & when you move.

You might also want to use the search box near the top of this page to check for posts about "artificial feeding of birds".

i'm thinking about getting a Banksia in a pot woko. I also saw a spotted turtle dove in the garden the other day.

That's interesting, Willskrills. I don't think I've heard of a Banskia growing in a pot. That's not to say it can't be done, of course.

The appearance of a Spotted Turtle Dove, an introduced species, in your garden is a sign that there aren't many native birds to compete with it. Every time a Spotted Turtle Dove appears at my place it's harrassed by a variety of native bird species. Hence I rarely see Spotted Turtle Doves for which I'm grateful as I fear the presence of this species might prevent a population of native Peaceful Doves & Bronzewings from becoming established.

Welcome Daniel.  As other members have mentioned, some native species do well as potted plants.  Smaller Grevillia and native grasses could be a good place to start.  If you have a locally owned plant nursery nearby (not necessarily one of the larger chain ones), that can be a good place to start to chat to someone about what is native to where you live, and what may thrive in your area/potted too.  Hope to see you around the forum!
