Powerful Owl....Sydney's first (2014) fledgling?

A very kind lady, Bev, told us she saw a chick looking out of a nesting hollow last Sunday (20 July 2014) not too far from her home and we managed to get some photos on Thursday.

Today we got a call to tell us the chick was out of the nest.

It was about a metre above the ground and its parents were watching closely from above.

Just after dark it flew upwards but it was way too dark and bushy to see how far it went.

As an added bonus another chick also popped its head out of the hollow after the sun went down.

So hopefully there will be some more activity over the next little while.

Cheers,

Antonia

Thank you, windshear.

Now if that is not adorably cute, I don't know what is.  Thankyou Bev wherever you are smiley, and thankyou Antonia & hubby for these wonderful pics of this amazing bird.  Love how at this age, the feathers/down are still scruffy and unfinished, almost giving a plush faux fur look.  Welcome to the world little one.  Look forward to seeing some more down the track.

Hi BabyBirdwatcher and AnnieJ.

Many thanks for your comments,

We went back last night, just before dark, and found the second chick near the ground.

Just on dark s/he flew up about 15 metres to a tree branch where the  parents were waiting with a flying fox.

Still hoping to find the first one again but there are many foxes about.

All fingers crossed,

Antonia

We have a look at this family every week or so.

They are still in the same place ....but who knows for how much longer?

The young one has been out of the nest  for about 15 weeks and is showing quite a few adult feathers on its chest.

Cheers,

Antonia

After seeing all the excellent Powerful Owl photos that have been posted recently,

we were inspired  to have a fresh look at the July fledgling.

He was in a playful mood...reminded me of a bored kitten rubbing and scratching

to fill in the day.

that's great to see!!!

Mine's still alive and well.

An adult in a gully nearby was not so well. The project's new coordinator gave me info on a dead PO.

I went to investigage and found the carcass and an arrow next to it.
very sad

Thanks birdie and canonguy.

Canonguy, we can imagine how awful it was to find an arrow

next to the dead owl. Sadly, events of the last 24 hours remind us that there are

a few crazy people about....

Yeah, lucky I didn't catch the a$$hole in the act I tell ya. He'd not be walking or talking today!

Sadly the authorities are pretty powerless, except with direct evidence. That is caught in the act.
