Somewhat like our Nankeen, saw these guys at San Simeon on the California coast. The male American Kestrel has some nice colouration on his top surfaces, grey wings with orange red body, fun birds to watch in action.

Great shots and quite similar. Thanks
Nice work ... does look like the nankeen.
My pic is also from California, I wonder if the different flight feather colour is age or sex related
Peter
Hi Peter,
Yep, the one you photographed (nice pic!) is a male, the one I photographed in flight is a female. The male has the striking red tail with black stripe across the bottom and the same red colour extends all the way up the back, contrasting with the grey wings, great looking birds.
thanks
that pic was taken in Oct '11 at the San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary, Marion County, LA. The area that I was in had paths with 3m shrubs, trees on either side; I saw the bird, got the pic (maybe 3) and then he flew and I saw him no more; unfortunately as it would be good to compare in flight pic of the male & female
Peter
Beautiful bird, no doubt about that, and a few similarities there for sure. You must be grinning every time you get a new o/s bird saturn!
