Hi there
I am really wanting to find out if there has been any Owl sightings in our area recently, I know our location is perfect for them but there are no hollows in trees around where we live. However, on my walk yesterday I discovered a Giant Fig Tree with not one, but THREE hollows in the one tree!
The hollows looked like they went down a long way.
And by the way, Bardwell Creek is a perfect place for them. We have had a breeding pair of Tawny Frogmouths even at our house once before (Last year in July) but no Owls so far I have reported around our neighborhood, but for a couple of days in Autumn early in the morning before sunrise in 2011, I had been hearing a strange bird that made a very loud, low, and mournful whistle. It would whistle from about 3am - 6am when the sun came up.
I got really excited and thought it could be an owl but I had no evidence to prove it.
The whistling was so loud that it could be heard from my bedroom, at the other end of the house pointing out to our backyard.
It stayed for about a week or two then I never heard from it again, however, one of my friends who lives not far away from us below a forested cliff area says that she heard the exact same whistle before. My speculation that if it was an owl it could have been a Sooty Owl but their Bomb Call whistles didn't match the mournful whistle I heard. This one however was far carrying, like the Sooty Owl, but without Screeching involved.
There are lots of big open parks and gardens around us and it's a fantastic place for wildlife, I have just never seen any Owls or heard reports of any Owls around our area.
I know there should be in Girahween park but I haven't been there in a while.
I really would love to know if there have been any Owls within the Rockdale Council district in Sydney I would love to know where they have been seen and what kinds there have been around.
Thank you!
Sorry, I can't help, don't live anywhere near you. But what you are describing is a sound I have heard for a long time in a tree close to my house. We do have different Owls in the Park behind us, but I have listened to countless recordings of sounds, and none of them matches. At times the whistle is loud, but it can also be very soft. Always just the one note, sometimes it sounds as if it is vibrating a little, a sound you would make by breathing out while whistling.
Can't wait to find out if someone can solve this?

Me too, my sister thinks it could be a bird, such as an owl, calling out to other owls in the district ... but if you say your Owls don't do that call then this is VERY interesting!
