Australasian Grebe

I have been trying to get a resonable shot of one of those. The are very shy, and don't come close to shore. It was a fair distance, and I had to crop the photo.

Thanks to Owen I now know the difference, the A Grebe has a yellow face spot, and the Hoary-headed Grebe doesn't.

that is a very good pic of an A Grebe

as you say 'they are very shy and don't come close to shore'

can I add 'and generally dive if they see you'

can I add to your thread with pics of the young, from Mt Penang Gradens, Gosford, NSW in Sept '11

and mum or dad on the nest from Bribie Is, Qld in Feb '12

That's a nice shot M-L, I know what you mean all my photos of them are at quite a distance.

Hey, Cath&Shane, put your close ups here as well. I'd love to see them.

the 3 of us have posted adults in breeding colours

so I thought that I should find a non-breeding colour pic

HaHa Peter, had me puzzled.

Thanks Cath&Shane, I have seen them there, but not that close. Well done.

Very interesting, looks almost like a different bird species. Thanks Peter, I'm learning something, thanks.

Very nice Marie-Louise. As Peter's shot illustrates the breeding colours are different from non-breeding. Nice to know the difference and at non-breeding stage it's possible to confuse Australian and Hoary-headed Grebes.

Great to see you loving your birdies. cool

Great shot M-L. I can't get this close to them. Those "Metal things" you all refer to are the stalks or stems of the water lillies.
