BIBY Forums Decline

Hi guys, has anyone noticed the decline in people in the BIBY forums in the last few weeks.

I would be interested to hear what people think is the reason.

Would the new log in system be hindering people?

Is everyone just too busy?

Are people going to other forums?

I just want to say that I have learnt alot from this forum and even made some new birding contacts.

I love how this forum isn't focussed on the quality of photos but the quality of life for our feathered friends and educating others on the impact we have on the environment both positively and negatively.

Cheers

Yes i have noticed this too. I wonder if it is the new log in, or Winter setting in?  ( I didn't receive the email re new login, as i was expecting, but it was still not a real problem).

Ms Woko, who is a lurker, tells me that she's deterred by the new log in.

I find the new login more complicated than the old but my expectation is that whenever there's change the new system is almost invariably more complex than the old. It seems to be an obsession with authorities, no matter who or where they are, to make things more complicated. This is probably getting away from the topic but it's an obsession of my own. In fact, I once worked in a government agency & reluctantly agreed to participate in the Form Killing Committee. We ended up with 29, yes, 29 more forms than we started with. So much for that agency's motivation to make things more efficient & productive.

Not sure what your issues are with the login, I use iPad and Mac at home, and PC at work (not there often enough to get into trouble, spent most of my time on the road). I have just saved my login details with each platform, and get logged in automatically. You might have to fiddle with settings to if you computer doesn't offer to save passwords. Only issue is if you share a computer and don't want others to have access to you account. I still look in at least once a day (except when out of range on holiday), but unfortunately don't get time for photography. Perhaps some are busier now?

I have noticed same thing Woko, changes are often to a more complicated system!

It's not so much that the new login is difficult, Dale. I think it's more that a change was made when the previous login was working well. I know that there are times when consolidating or rationalizing make things more efficient but the rapid changes people are experiencing is putting them under great stress - stress they'd rather do without, especially when so often change is for change's sake. Older folk probably experience more stress in response to rapid & frequent change than younger folk but even younger folk, I sense, are affected by such change.

This doesn't mean that change is the only reason Birds In Backyards has been quiet of late. I've noticed that it's a cyclical thing.

Unfortunately decline is inevitable, as is renewal, but the rate it takes place can be slowed down in the hope that something new and better emerges from it. Habitat restoration where it has been degraded or changed completly and habitat conservation should really be our focus because without habitat we have nothing to be proud about. I think that all human activities in this country that impact on the natural habitat threatning life as we know it, should be under constant scrutiny and review. Apathy is our habitat's worst enemy.

For Australian birds, natives=life, exotics=death, so do them a favour and go plant some natives and save their lives.

As i already had a birdlife logon id - i didnt have any trouble with the new logon system. I can see that it would have put some people off if they had to set up a new id.

I think two of the more regular photo contributors in recent times - laza and alcatraz - mentioned they were away travelling and would not be posting for a while. That certainly hits the number of posts in that forum.
