Birds at Ash Island

Today I managed to slip out to Ash Island for a while. I saw lots of litle birds - superb fairy wrens, grey fantails and a pretty little yellow one whose name I cannot remember. I saw a whistling kite go over a few times but could not get a good photo. I also got another bird of prey just before dark, which I think is an Australian kestrel. I was able to get a couple of flying shots of a white-faced heron

Hi Birdgirl
Your "Pretty Little yellow one" might be:
Yellow Thornbill (if feeding in Wattle Trees or Sheoaks especially)
http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/bird/115
Yellow-rumped Thornbill (if feeding on the ground and flying back to trees for safety). The rump shows bright yellow as they fly away from you.

Another possibility is the White-throated Gerygone ("Warbler")
The photo on this link is not as yellow as it is in fact.

This is a better coloured image - from the COG Gallery.

.
Hope those ideas help you.

Thanks Denis - I think it is the yellow thornbill and I was told when I posted one some time ago from the same place, but forgot. They are in the casuarinas at Ash Island and the yellow is very bright. They are about the size of a wren.

Hi Tassie - it's good to be back - I missed you all! I didn't go far - just to Sydney and I was looking at dugongs in Sydney Aquarium instead of birds
Hi Steve - I'd love to join in with something like that but will have to wait until the children are older. The birds of prey like to fly around the model aircraft there
Thanks Tark - I find the flight shots very challenging but I keep trying!

HI Birdgirl
You are getting good at the flying shots just have to be in the right place at the right time( I have some lookers at the boxes ) Top shots.

Hi Birdgirl
Yes, Little Thornbill
Part of the clue is their love of certain types of trees - including Casuarinas.
That yellow tone is also distinctive.
Glad you could sort that out.
Cheers
Denis

Hi Birdgirl,
Sounds like you had a great day. I especially like the pictures of the Heron in flight, they are so graceful.
