Well ... here is the elusive Koel, though he wasn't acting at all elusive today. He stayed in the same spot for 3 hours, hardly moving and then only to get away from me he moved very obligingly to a palm tree with a much nicer background and some good snacks for him.
it felt so satisfying to catch him at last!
And another couple ....

Funny that, I heard my first koel for a while yesterday :) Must be breeding season for them.
Nice shots Birdie. I have found that Koels are almost always in those palm trees with the red berries.
Male Koels have been around here in Brisbane for a few weeks. But this morning I heard my first male-female duet for the season, during which the male does the rising "wurroo wurroo wurroo" call, and the female does the harsh "kek kek kek" call.
Birdie, have you got any photos of the gorgeous females? That can be your next task :-)
Hi Andy.... I took this back in January but thought I would post it again for you. The females are very elusive too!! OR this may have been a juvenile ... to be honest I can't remember!!

Well done - you have lots of great shots. The fruits match his eyes
I walked past again today and he was sitting on his own again in the same frangipani tree. I was thinking that maybe the females are not all here yet. I heard him calling after I passed by, and thought that maybe he sits near those palms as he knows that is where the females will come when they want to feed. Last season they were in the same area, and the very first Koel I ever saw was eating these kind of palm berries
yes Birdgirl... the eyes are just awesome, I kept staring at them thinking they would change their intense colour but hte remained the same.

He stayed there for about 4 days looking lost and I could hear calls in the neighbourhood, now he appears to have flown.
