Fantail.... in New Zealand

I took this photo in Queenstown New Zealand.... not quite a kiwi but I was still happy to see him.

Hi Berldo, I thought you've gone missing! Did you holiday in New Zealand? Is that a grey fantail, the same species as found here?

Beautiful shot Berldo, hope you had a great trip.

As a Kiwi, I would have to agree that it is a fantail. They are very cute and follow you around readily looking for the insects that your body sweat attracts. I have never thought of them as anything other than a fantail.
"The species was formerly considered to be conspecific (the same) as the Grey Fantail of Australia and New Caledonia, however due to differences in its calls most authorities now treat it as a separate species".... this is a quote from Wikipedia but I am sure there are more substantiated ones on line.

There are a few Australian native birds in NZ - Morepork owl, magpie, silvereye, swamphen, raven. Some were thought to ne natives of NZ but paeleontologists can't find any fossils of them.

Interesting Greg. We called them moreporks, wax-eyes and Pukeko. Didn't have ravens where I grew up in the North Island...that I know of anyway.

I am not sure if it is a grey fantail BBnerd. And you are correct birdie, it did have a very different call; A high pitched "choice, choice" followed by an end note "bro" (sorry couldn't resist)

The story of ravens in NZ is an interesting one. Until the mid 90s, they were only established in one small area of the north island. Authorities decided it was a good time to eradicate them, the result was ravens dispersed as far as the south island. The ravens decided not to hang around to be exterminated. Now they have a much wider range than formerly, you mess with crows at your peril.
