Spent the day at Boreen Point out the back of the Noosa lakes system.
Was overjoyed at the end of the day when this gorgeous little bird flew down to feed near where we were sitting. I had spend the best part of 2 1/2 hours stalking through mozzie infested bush following what I think was her mate's call.... pictures of him are appallingly bad but I'd do it all again tomorrow to spend another day like yesterday. Played hide and seek with a pair of whipbirds. got followed by a huge goanna who was very helpful in putting up the birds as he climbed every tree looking for their eggs! He flushed the whip birds into a panic so I got incredibly good sightings of them ... I really did and have the terrible shots to prove it!! LOL
I think it was a Rufus whistler call that had me enchanted but actually catching him was another matter.
If all birds were as co operative as these pacific Blacks we would be in heaven :)
Have more but I was impatient to see what this first bird was for sure .
I think this is the best shot I could find of the bird with the beautiful call.
.. rufous whistler????

This egg rustler went up every tall tree and down while the birds were in a mad panic and showing themselves every where...much to my delight of course.
Unsure of this little one.... female GW? couldn't see him around though.
Now this is the one with the lovely call and very loud...
Maybe it is not a RW but some kind of thrush??
This is just to prove that I actually saw these Whip birds ... and had quite a time with them in the low bracken etc.... but no cigar for the best photo that is for sure LOL

I have a few male rufus whisters around at the moment, this morning I saw a couple doing a display. i never seem to see the females, but I think it is the males do most of the singing. The bird in your photo seems to have a white eyebrow mark, not sure what it is but seems like a whistler or shrike-thrush. Check the calls on BIBY to see if you can recognise it.
Hi Birdie,
I'm thinking that, as you suggested, the one with the streaked chest is the female Rufous Whistler. The one with the non-streaked chest is the female Golden Whistler.
Grey Shrike-Thrushs do look similar to female whistlers, but the shrike-thrush is bigger. Also, the Grey Shrike-Thrush has a distinctive call that ends in a whipbird-type noise, like "whip whip whip hoo-ee" (rising in pitch at the end). However, just to be confusing, the GW also makes a whipbird-type noise at the end of one of its calls. So perhaps size is a helpful indicator.
Geez after all that babbling, back to the point: Yep I agree with female RW and female GW :-)
Perhaps the one with the beautiful call is a Little Shrike-thrush.
Cheers,

Nice shots birdie.
I'll have to agree with George. It does look alot like a Little Shrike-thrush.
The first one is definitely a Rufous Whistler.
Well Done!
Nice shots Birdie.
Aaagh! I am totally confused now. I have looked at so many beautiful images on the net of both Juv RW and little shrike thrushes that I am going nuts.
I think the beautiful and very loud call I heard was the Little Shrike thrush.... which would tend to make me think that this is a female LST. He was calling and she was responding with calls very much like the one on here and the descriptions I am reading of their calls.
Help someone!

hope it helps.
Good shots Birdie. Pretty sure it's not a rufous whistler or a shrike thrush, but I can't offer an opinion as to what it is- sorry. I reckon your little one could be a golden whistler though.
Oxalis is not my friend
Thanks guys .... BBN what about the buff breasted one is that a Little Shrike thrush? It looks like it and sounded like it and I could be totally wrong about the unknown bird being his mate.... some one was ringing out a very solid and repetitious peep peep peep sound after each of his calls though!
Cathshane I'll check that out. I memorised the damned sound for three hours and now I am confused when I hear others on recordings. Lesson learned...I will take the recorder on all future outings. ( oops... and a notebook) :')

Haven't seen or heard one before Birdie, but just looked it up and it certainly looks like one (little shrike thrush).

I have seen others on the internet that look like this and I think it is a Female Rufous whistler also. I took this one between Alexandra and Acheron on 3/10/2010, but I couldn't see a male anywhere.
:')
Great find birdie and it sounds as if you had a great day too
