Very nice photos, very bright and sharp. How close to them were you? ( Did you crop, or didn't they have a tail in the first place? Sorry to ask these questions. )
I love butcherbirds. Do you live close to a beach, it looks vey sandy? M-L
That great bill will one day start tearing into the flesh of prey! Otherwise, very adorable shot of the bird. Great use of contrast :) love how it brought out those tiny feathers on its face!
I agree with Owen, eyebrow shows that it is Pied
Hi all.

He/she was about 2 foot away. Not cropped, straight out of the camera in all respects. Has a beautiful tail; I concentrated on a full body shot and went by the rule that something of the photo's feature must run outside the image. Made ya look didn't it.

Not anywhere near the beach. In Central Queensland Highlands at the Gemfields. It is actually black soil, just was using the camera on auto, JPEG and a narrow focus point so it picked up the coloration of the bird rather than the dirt.

Damn. Got it wrong again.

Makes sense. We have a lot of Pied BB's around here. They are quite friendly and often just hang around the claim for most of the day. It could be the case of the parents letting the offspring know who will not harm them, and where to get an easy feed.
.
We would have about 15-20 BB's around here. When they in full song, A lot of just stop what we are doing and enjoy the beaut songs. Hard to choose between the Magpie and the Butcher Bird for the better song. I am tending toward the Butcher Bird.

Thanks all for the comments.

This one's a juvenile Pied Butcherbird. Nice shots, like the poses.
Cheers, Owen.
