Went to the QUT gardens yesterday when I nearly jumped out of my socks. I know this may sound not so jump out of your socks worthy it was a Hardhead. Normally at Wetland and Ponds im just watching Pacific Black Ducks and Grey Teals so this was big for me. Do any of you guys no a good Wetlands or Pond with a good variety of Waterbirds in Brisbane. Thank you.
Enjoy!

Hardhead At The QUT Gardens
Aha, I can remember when i saw my first Harhead on a trip, I was stoked! It's always great to see a new bird in an area when you've been going there for ages and haven't seen anything new. You got some nice photos! And keep an eye out for some Australasian Grebes, they seem to be busy down here and I only saw my first one at a local pond after going there for a while. Happy birding!
I have never even heard of a Hard head let alone seen one, so well done Qldbird. I am very curious about you two. Do you have parents that are interested in birds or have you developed the hobby by yourselves? Amateur, I hope you study your school books as hard as you do your field guides LOL!
Nice pics Qb

I've been interested in birds ever since i was in Pre-school.
My mum and dad were never interested in birds but my mum did know Raoul Slater at one point. I do hope one day I can get a career in Birds and or photography because they are two great passions of mine.
Well said, and congratulations on knowing your own mind at such a young age. You are making a great start on the photography and obviously are well versed in bird stuff already. I have been involved with photography for over 20 years and still it is only a hobby!
My interest in birds , although it has always been there as i look back on my early photos, has really been increased by moving to the Sunshine Coast with the beautiful array of bird life here. However t has been the involvement with this forum that has led to a real passion. When I started I thought there were only a few birds around my house .... how wrong was I? I also thought we didn't get small birds here on the Coast..... WRONG AGAIN.
So keep up the good work :)

Perhaps you've heard of a White-eyed duck Birdie? They also go by that name. My parents have absolutely no interest in birds really but my Father really has taken notice of them since I began birdwatching, like he said he never knew about all the different types of birds out there. It is absolutely amazing the kinds of birds you see when you're looking rather then just walking past not paying attention. I've always have had an interest in wildlife, as far back as 7 I can remeber going on bushwalks and being absolutely thrilled by the biodiversity in them, some of my fondest memories from trips have arisen from wildlife, especially this great treehouse we got at Hawk's Nest to stay in (it was like on a platform centred around a tree)! Possums at the dead of night, bush turkeys walking around the deck, it was just great. I've always loved the outdoors and animals and after I found this forum it really did spark a passion, and the amount of birds I discovered in the local area was amazing, and I'm still finding new birds all the time. Unfortunately it seems most of my generation gets their thrills from video games and mobile phones to stay in contact 24/7, it really seems weird to me. I think our generation has got to be the most ignorant about ecology (etc.) ever. Most can't even name a Noisy Miner and couldn't care in the slightest about the natural world around them being surrounded with urban blocks and houses. That reminds me of our "biology" teacher who thought there were no Ravens in Australia... I'm lucky my Grandmother has a farm, I love going up there for hours with the cows and watching for birds, it really is great there :) Hopefully i'll get a job with the environment or something!

Haha, I just remembered I have an essay due tomorrow which I have to start! If I really did study my school books as much as my field guide I think I would be a genius :)
Hey that was a great read Amateur. ANd.... I hate to sound like a parent, but if you want to work in that field the chances are they are going to want a piece of paper that represents a few years at uni... so better get the books out !! ha ha

Hi guys
I really enjoyed your posts and am happy that some of the younger generation are not playing plants vs zombies. I'm always showing my kids birds of prey and they run outside when they hear yellow-tailed black cockatoos as well.
Good spotting with the hardhead - keep up the good work!
Nice shots Qld bird never seen a Hardhead before.
Birdgirl, my daughter gives the electronic stuff a good bash, but she will always yell to me if she sees or hears a yellow tail black as she knows I adore them. She loves nature but unfortunately she tires of waiting for me to find the elusive shot when we are out together. Sharing the camera is something I must admit, I do reluctantly, but compromise is always a part of life and she has a good eye for it.
Cheers
