Hunter Wetlands Centre

Hi eveyone
I went to the Hunter Wetlands Centre during the week and am only just finding time to post. I wanted to find the white-breasted sea eagles but I have never seen them when I have been there, only the whistling kites until today

Whistling kite (far away)

Juvenile swamp harrier (far away again, sorry about the quality). I think this is what it is because of the placement of the light and dark on the underwing and they do live there

Straw-necked ibis

Grey fantail

Superb fairy-wren

Australasian grebe

No3 for me its a great shot,

A Photo is only as good as the eyes that look at it.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the first shot is a little eagle. They have a very distinctive pattern under the wings, an "M" shape. Nice shots, love the Ibis.

looks like a good place to go birdgirl, the starw necked ibis is a lovely capture, their plumage is iridescant in the sun. Thanks for sharing, you'll have to keep going back until you get to see the white breasted eagle...so looking forward to more shots:)

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best

Thanks all for your comments. Here is another photo. I deleted all the others - I think I may have been a bit too ruthless. Oh well, I'll have to go back there and take some more.
smeedingo2 I did not notice the shoveller ducks - I really wanted to see the birds of prey but I was looking around me as I walked, mostly seeing the birds I am familiar with. I saw a lovely golden bird near the entrance but could not focus on it in the trees

Hi Birdgirl
I will be in Newcastle next week, is this place very far out from there?

Cheers

It is in Newcastle: you turn off the Pacific Highway (heading into Newcastle) onto Sandgate Road (big cemetery at the intersection), go just over 1 km then turn right into the Hunter Wetlands Centre at a roundabout that is just after the turn off left to go to Newcastle University. The suburb is Shortland. It costs about $10 to get in but is well worth it.
When are you going to be in Newcastle?

Sounds good. I am driving down and arriving there this Friday I think. It has been a rush job so the planning has been non existent. Will be staying with friends in Charlestown, then going down to Sydney then back for the next weekend.

Forgot to say you will be coming from the opposite direction so won't be turning off the Pacific Highway - just check google maps
