Usually we see this bird running off or flying low to get out of our sight...
Yesterday, however, I had the opportunity to watch a Pheasant Coucal close-up, at one point less than 2 metres away from me, checking out a Freshwater Pandanus and the banks of a billabong in Kakadu National Park.
nice clear shots i know what you mean they always seem to run away
Interestingly I had one sitting quitely only a few metres from my car on sunday. From it's behaviour I think there were young ones hiding. It seemed reluctant to fly and went up into a nearby tree before giving what I think was a warning call and flying off. Well done, my shots aren't nearly this good.

Nice series of shots that show interesting behaviour. I hope you were looking out for the handbags in the billabong.

Probably going to feel silly when I get an answer to this... what does I hope you were looking out for the handbags in the billabong mean?!!
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
Hi heva1,
GeorgeP was referring to Estuarine crocdiles. ;-)
And, yes, on the day there were at least 2 of them around.
But I've got a lot of respect for these animals and prefer to stay clear of them.
