Thanks rjwaring for sharing your photos. What beautiful birds. I have never seen any of them. Are all of them australian natives? I tried to find the crimson finch on the bird finder, but nothing there. In the S&D it doesn't tell me if they are natives. Can you tell me please?

Thanks for the comments. And thanks Owen1 for responding to Araminta's question, hate it when work gets in the way of important things! :-) yes all native as far as I know.

Nice shots you got there of some wonderfully coloured, small birds, looks like you had a great time in Kakadu! I have seen a few finches in my time but I always find them to small and flighty to get any good shots so well done :)

In regards to Araminta, firstly the BiBY bird finder only covers what I think is a round half of all Australian birds and secondly (assuming you have the same version of S&D I have) it will have "intro.", "E" or nothing accompanying the binomial and common name in the first line at the end. The intro meaning introduced species, E meaning endemic to Australia and nothing meaning that the bird is native but not endemic to Aus (I'm pretty sure about this anyway).

Thanks Amateur, I have a 1993 edition, it doesn't have that information. Next Christmas isn't far away!? Thanks for your help everyone! M-L

Nice set of photos, the crimson finch is my favorite bird !
Araminta to make it even more confusing there are two races of crimsons, black fronted being the most common and a white fronted witch are mainly seen on cape york.
there are also two types of masked finch standard and white eared also from cape york (the one in the photo is a juvenile standard) and many others have sub species witch can make getting a positive ID frustrating at times
