"The Kookaburra crash landed in our place early last year with a damaged wing and leg, probably due to coming off second best in a dispute with another of his kind. After a few pecks, scratches and bites I managed to settle him down and put it into one of my dogs travel cages. Rang the local wildlife agency who told me to put him up tree and leave him. Easier said than done .....couldn't get him back out of the cage without a fight, so I hung the cage up under the patio, threw in some mince meat and left it there with the cage door open. He made no attempt to move out and come evening he was still there (I think it's a 'he'). I figured with all the trauma he'd been thru' he'd have 'fallen off the twig' come morning; but when I went to have a look he was sitting on top of the cage. When I moved closer he flew over to a branch on one of our trees. He was still a bit wobbly on the flight path and was still having problems with landing gear functioning: but at least he seemed on the mend. He took off mid afternoon only to return the next morning!!! I thought that it was my fish pond which was attracting him back but that doesn't seem to interest him thankfully. He got quite tame after a while but only with me.....if anyone else was around he'd steer well away. I managed to feel about with his leg to check if it was a break; but in the end I think it was a dislocation of some sort because he's as good as gold now. He's got a mate now so we don't see him as often, only in the evenings.
The Lorrikeets can't make up their minds as to whether they want to be free or live in captivity!!! Been around for almost two years....never far away, and if the door was left open they'd be in. We call them 'Mork and Mindy'." - Shaka
Lovely pic and story Shaka , thanks for telling it.

Like your story Shaka (still don't know what "Shaka" stands for, nor" Ezra "? May be one day you will tell me?) On the other hand, I can tell you,how to tell male or female in a Kookaburra. The girl is the dirty looking one,the boy is more white and clean looking. (Just like in life, the girls have to work more, and get dirty, while the boys just look beautiful!) :-)
