Laughing Kookaburras

Yesterday we took a drive to Orford on the east coast and came upon this happy pair.
Now I cannot sex these birds. Who can tell me if one is a female and if so wherein the difference lies?

Hi Tark - good to see you've survived all the laughter and are posting again. Very nice photos. The Reader's Digest Complete Book of Australian Birds - which is my favourite reference - says 'sexes similar; male flecked extensively blue-white over lower back and rump'

Thanks sis, yeah, I can take it when I do something stupid! And it's nice to have my lens back. :)
.
Funny thing is that I didn't notice any blue on these birds and wondering whether Tasmanian Kookas don't have it. According to BiBY Birdfinder, Kookas are not endemic to Tasmania; they were introduced.

Next time I'm in the bookshop (or Library) I'll take a looknat the Readers Digest Book of Au Birds. Maybe worth adding to my bookshelf. It would make a really nice Xmas / B'day pressie Sandy - if you're reading this! LOL
