This bird has been hunting near my house for a couple of weeks. I'm pretty sure its a Nankeen Kestrel. She was here this time around this time last year. Its quite big so I guess its a female. Does anyone know how to tell? Anyway, after many attempts, I finally got a shot with her? wings up.
Quite pleased with myself!

Nankeen Kestrel
you should be pleased! that's a very nice photo,Roger, well done
it looks like a Nankeen kestrel to me,though maybe a young one?
I think it's a female, as you indicate, Roger. Males are grey on the head & tail, females chestnut. The relatively heavy streaking on the front suggests it's also a young one.
You are so incredibly lucky and it is a lovely photo
It is indeed a lovely photo, getting the wings spread out like that was great, all th e marking came through so clearly.
