Nesting Swamphens and the rest of my walk

I took the camera with me when walking as I had seen the Purple Swamphens building a nest on my local pond. I did a fairly poor job of hand holding that day so didn't produce anything mindblowing, but it was lovely to see him ( I presume it was him)hunting around and trying to break the stalks of the reeds and then taking what he found back to her
to place in the newly built nest.

Came across a few other interesting characters and missed many more !

This gorgeous little Eastern Yellow was calling his heart out right above me and it took me a while to look up and see where he was

I wanted to stay and catch some scrub wrens but the march flies and mozzies had me running!

Your photo of the Eastern Yellow Robin (EYR) reminded me of an awesome experience we had last Friday. I meant to post it here but don't know if I did or not.
.
I was out doing some volunteer bush care in some dry rainforest at a place called Gold's Scrub near Lake Samsonvale. While walking into the bush someone noticed a small nest at about chest height with 3 eggs in it. My guess was a Willie Wagtail nest, but it turned out to be an EYR.
.
As we walked past it at about 10am, there were 3 eggs in it. When we came back for lunch about 12.30 or so we avoided the nest area so as not to frighten the mother or cause her to abandon the nest. I just wanted to have another quick look (and probably did the wrong thing) so went back to look again. When I did I was amazed to see that one of the birds had hatched - it was so young that it hadn't even opened it's eyes yet. It was such an awesome experience.
.
On top of that, I went up to Mum and Dad's afterwards and while walking through the bush had a male King Parrot down pretty low, following me along from branch to branch for a little while. Apparently they may be the culprits eating Mum's tomatoes... :)
.
Was a good day all round.

Cheers

Hi birdie, think that may be a Dusky Moorhen, very similar to a PSH but a good bit smaller.Yellow tip to the bill is a good guide.

Hey thanks Ed...... I was thinking that myself after I posted it but just couldn't find anything to compare it to. The blue didn't seem vibrant enough being a Kiwi I should have known that ...duh Grew up with Pukekos everywhere.

Timmo ... great story about the EYR nest. Your Mum can spare a few tomatoes in a good cause can't she???
I'd grow heaps if i thought it would attract the king parrots down low!
