Just wanted to share a fantastic roadtrip from Melbourne that I have just had.
First stop Cohuna on Gunbower island, teeming with birds and wildlife after the rains. Then on to Mildura and Mungo National park, Menindi lakes (just beautiful on the banks of Copi Hollow...bird heaven) up to Flinders ranges and return via Adelaide (Belair national Park) down to Melbourne via Robe in SA.
Here is a selection of my finds.....

It was a brilliant trip, and favourite place was Copi Hollow in Menindi lakes, an 'overnighter that turned into four days...walks from the caravan park to bush walks, pondage, rivers, and lakes with a bird at every turn:)

Sounds like you had a wonderful time, Heva. They are all great shots and I'm pleased to see you posting again.
Cheers,

Awesome shots and great range. I am quite jealous of the Spiny cheeked HE, Apostlebird and Red-backed Kingfisher because I have never seen them before! Really well done.
Cheers, Owen.
thanks George and Owen, yes, I was rapt at the Red backed KF, a first for me, and he was very obliging posing for me, spotted him at Menindi lakes NSW. Is the other KF a Sacred? what sort of Tern is that and is the BOP a black kite?

Lovely pics, doesn't the red back show up well on the Kingfisher? Yes it is a Black Kite, one of my books calls it a fork-tailed kite but all the others say black. There seem to be a few around at the moment. Sounds as if you had a great trip, must try to go down that way next time we have a longish trip. We have just been to NE Victoria where the rye grass is doing its thing, spent all my time with my nose in a handkerchief and my eyes running. Lucky we were with relatives and they put up with me. We haven't seen a spotted crake, he looks great too. I'm never sure about terns, with the black just over his eye like that could he be a common tern?

Wow what a fantastic trip. I'm glad to see you posting soem shots again. I am envious of your sighting of the black kite
hi birdgirl, yeah the trip was very therapeutic, best medicine lol:)
As for the Black kite, it was a very hot day in Menindi and we let the dogs out on the oval for a leg stretch, my old dog Molly (14) walked to the middle and lay down in the cool grass, the Black Kite appeared, circled above her and then swooped down several times real low.....checking out if she was 'carrion' yet...how rude!she's not a highly active dog ...but really:)

That's hilarious. I hope you gallantly protected her. I've noticed that some BOP are curious. The whistling kites and white-bellied sea eagles sometimes circle around me when I have my leafy camo gear on - checking out if I am some strange new mobile plant I suppose (triffid?)
hah don't know about gallantly protecting her...I called her so she lifted her head just as the Kite was going for another low pass...and he realised 'nup still alive..I'll come back later' :)
