I was able to stand behind the shed this morning and get these photos of the Rainbow Bee-Eaters flying and swooping.
Unfortunately the photos were not of the best quality to start with and they have been cropped in quite a lot.
I think the birds are feeding young - they seem to fly around and then one of them was on the ground looking like it was feeding.
When they took a break I walked over to where they had been and could see a freshly dug tunnel but it seemed to be partly closed - does anyone know if that is what they do?
great shots jaytee :) my favourite is the second one
i so want to see one - o well one day :)
:)
Beautiful shots you are so lucky!! They do make tunnels in banks I believe . Aren't they just the most beautiful creatures?
I like no 2 as well.
Well done!

Im stealing Mykys response from another thread i want one, wish they visited us you lucky thing.
Thanks for the comments, I know I am so lucky to have the RBEs so close.
I fell in love with RBEs when I first saw a photo of one on another site. When we moved to this house 12 months ago I did a "double take" when I saw a RBE on our back fence I never dreamt that I would see one in real life!!
I should count my blessings . . . but I wish I had a better zoom lens for my camera so that I could get some nice sharp photos of them.

Stand in line with the rest of us Jeanne! What kind of lens set up are you using? I would think that maybe a faster shutter would freeze up a bit of motion and get you a better picture if you can do it? It would be hard to fill the frame (before cropping) with such a busy little bird anyway. Pics 1-3 would be about what I would think was possible for a fast moving subject like that! then, if you have a great shot you can always crop if the image if sharp enough. You may know all of this stuff so forgive me if that is the case. :)

Thanks Birdie for your helpful advice, I will try a faster shutter speed next time.
I took the above photos using a Canon 400D with 75-300mm lens at 300mm and tripod.
