Red-collared Lorikeet

I always mistook them for Rainbow Lorikeets until I found out they look slightly different in the North and are actually seen as a separate species.

Wow, they are very similar aren't they. I'd have certainly made the same mistake in identifying them.

Great shots. Apparently they have been merged with Rainbows but I don't know for sure. Still interesting to see the difference.

They seem to display the same behaviour as Rainbows. I think Owen is correct - Christidis and Boles have lumped them in with Rainbow Lorikeet and the other list (name escapes me) has them as a separate species. Nice work.

I agree they are very similar, good photos.

This is a quote from The Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds under the heading Rainbow Lorikeets:-
"Two Forms occur: eastern form, also occurs as escapee in south-west with red breast and yellow-green collar; and red-collared form from northern Australia with orange breast and collar"
