Townsville garden July 2011

After a quite month in June some good visitors this month.

Dusky Honeyeater, only see this one in the garden a couple of times a year.

Wompoo Fruit-Dove, maybe a Cyclone Yasi displacement.

Orange-footed Scrubfowl, second year in a row (never b4) these birds have arrive as a chick (independent from the minute they hatch) and stayed.

Pale-headed Rosella, seen in the garden only several times a year.

Fan-tailed Cuckoo, very common at the moment.

Pheasant Coucal, a nonbreeding bird.

A young Brush Cuckoo, like the Fan-tailed seem to be lots of these around.

I'm interested in your comment about the cyclone Yasi-diplaced Wompoo fruit pigeon. Did Yasi have all sorts of effects on birds? Many years ago I recall a very reliable bird watcher reporting his sighting of a red-tailed tropic bird not far from Alice Springs (I think it was). This was just after a cyclone.

Hi Woko, Yes a lot of birds are displace by storms, very difficult to turn around with a 100kph wind pushing you along.The best time for frigatebirds and other seabirds here in Townsville is after a storm. Although the majority of the influx of birds after Yasi were possibly looking for food as the northern forests suffered badly.

HI Ed, as usual your garden never fails to delight!!! I wold so love to see a Wompoo close up. I have heard them up in Maleny in the rainforest but they are miles too high to see! and the rest of your shots are are great as usual...you have such a wide array of birds . thanks for sharing them with us.
