Thought it was a black bird at first and then noticed it had some green wing feathers and a speckled breast. Couldn't get a clear shot of it, it was staying in the leaves and branches of the fig tree. Hubby saw it seated on a bench seat under our tree - wish I had!
It looks like a cross between a blackbird, wattlebird and juvenile crimson rosella. It has a longish neck, not thick like a wattlebird. It's head is similar to that of a black bird and it has the dull green colour on its wings that juvenile rosellas have.
I haven't yet heard what sound it makes.
Any ideas?
Probably an Olive-backed Oriole.
I agree.

Not heard of one of those before. But I've just looked it up and that looks like it for sure! First time I've seen one of these in the time we've lived here (nearly 5 years). I love discovering 'new' birds in our region. Thanks heaps.

Yep, they also look quite similar to a female figbird, but the yellow/orange beak is a giveaway, and the chest barring is usually more pronounced.

That's an Olive Backed Oriole for sure seen one recently as well. They are awesome looking birds.
Never seen a figbird either. Something else to look out for! Now I've seen this Oriole I'll be watching for its return, you can be sure!

Wow Kathie, that is great. I have never seen one in my area. I had no idea they were around here. What a find

Yeah, I was thrilled. I was annoyed hubby didn't tell me he'd seen it on the bench till after the fact. But then he doesn't notice when it's a 'new' bird

Maybe it's not in his "job description"!
