Bird Baths

Hi,
does anyone have any advice on how to supply water for the birds without the mosquitos using the baths to breed in? Or is this asking the impossible??

Emptying and replacing the water weekly should do it. That will also keep algae growth down. If replacing the water is out of the question... then I'm out of ideas!

I use a very shallow water dish instead of a bird bath, and refill with fresh water often. This seems to work just fine.

If you have a deep bird bath, You could try using mosquito repelling plants in the vicinity of your bird bath. Some examples are citronella, rosemary and marigolds.

Good luck!

Birdbaths should be cleaned out weekly so there should be no problem with mosquitos taking over.

Thanks for your replies,
I have been emptying the water every few days - used the water on the potted plants nearby - so far so good. last week when the temp was up around the 40 degree mark, the Lorikeets were hanging on the screen door waiting for fresh water. they dived right in even before I had finished filling up the bath!

It may pay to add a few baths if they are knocking on your door! The birds are doing it tough at the moment. Thousands have died in the northern parts of WA. Article below-
