Birds photographed while on tour in Central Australia

While know many of these birds... I'm happy for them to be confirmed by wiser people than me.

All are photographed using Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ 1000

Great set of shots. NIce work getting that one of the heron with the fish. Thats a unique one of the magpie lark strutting about with its chest stuck out. I like that one of the butcher bird posed on that branch as well.

Are there any in particular you need help/confirmation on identifying?

All apart from those that you mentioned and the Egret and finch.

BTW thanks for the kind words. The FZ1000 makes life easy, especially because of the 4k video which I can extract 8mpx stills from. As with the flight of the Pied Butcher Bird.

#3 is Australasian Grebe

#4 might be white plumed honeyeater

#7 is pacific black duck

#8 is coot

#12 & #14 are both white plumed honeyeater I think

Great selection of birds there NAC. You did well to get the White-Necked Heron with a fish and a good sized fish as well!

Timmo - have to strongly dissagree with Bustard.

I would say White-Necked Heron

Bugger! Yes you're completely right.

I just looked at size/shape/colour, not the fact that it was standing in water and eating fish... laugh

I just added two more. The second was an almost perfect shot of the Wagtail catching his breakfast, which unfortunately wasn't a great photo, due to low light. But it shows him at just the right moment!

Timmo, I am quite certain that those are Great Egrets, as the gape extends behind the eye. For number 4, I would have to agree with whistling duck- probably a juvenile white-plumed honeyeater

I agree with Hello Birdy about the Egrets. Definately Great Egrets because of the gape, plus the really long neck.

Here's my thoughts

  1. Great Egret
  2. Great Egret
  3. Australasian Grebe
  4. Very Young White-plumed Honeyeater
  5. White-Necked heron
  6. Zebra Finch
  7. Pacific Black Duck
  8. Eurasian Coot
  9. Magpie Lark
  10. Pacific Black Duck
  11. Magpie Lark
  12. White-plumed Honeyeater
  13. Pied Butcherbird (juvenile)
  14. White-plumed Honeyeater
  15. Pied Butcherbird (Adult)
  16. Crested Pigeon
  17. Black-fronted Dotterel
  18. Zebra Finch

Hope that helps.

Maybe put number 4 in identifications so one of the more experienced guys can answer it.
