Birds of prey field day ... after the fire ...roasted rodent!

I went back to look for my Red Backed FWs and found that the field next to the swamp had lit up and was all chargrilled.  Never seen so many BOP at one time...it was amazing. Met up with a few other birders there who helped to confirm that we had whistling kite, spotted harriers, black kites ( by the dozen) and swamp harriers.  SO I went back todya to see who was still around. found heaps of whistling and black kites.

Black Kite on a nearby perch

And from looking at the tail I think this was a black kite.... not really sure . They were all cruising low over the chargrilled grass looking for easy pickings.

What state was that in? I'm assuming up north. We've had only cold and wet here in Victoria. Lovely blue sky.  We're starting to get more of that now.  I don't know raptors very well but I do like what you've taken. Sorry I can't help with names.

Thanks Kathie, all my shots are taken on the Sunshine Coast in Qld unless I state otherwise. This was a test for Holly who was trying to fix the issue with my signature not coming up on my posts when I add photos.

I have always had a signature stating where I am so as to avoid having to state the place everytime I post.

It is either a black kite or a whistling kite but I rather think it is a black.

Oh blast it didn't work! I was hoping the button click was an easy solution...

Will get the web guys to look into it. It used to show up didn't it?

Great photos btw...

Sorry, I keep forgetting where people live (except Araminta as I know she lives near me) and we can't click on profiles to see anything about people posting. I know my signature is working so I just assumed you posted without yours.

Great shots Adrienne. The perching one is likely a Black Kite. The cere appears quite yellow, and the Whistling does not have a yellow cere.

I have others of that one flying and one of it perched just before so I will check them out

Yes I need to look into some options there at some stage. I have a big couple of months with events and activities so will get to it at some stage soonish...

Great shots Adrienne. Looks like your having heaps of luck lately. Keep them coming.

Great pics.  Was it a burn off, or a bush fire?  Though burn offs are as damaging IMO.

Hi Birdie, both Black Kites, second one obvious from the tail. Lovely shots. Regards, Richard

Shane keep  in touch via PM and I will send you my mobile number. If they are still there I'll let you know as it is great shooting :)

Thye have been there all week so far.

Karen I am not sure if it was deliberate, but was told it just went up. Since then  they have been burning off a few fields of cane grass etc nearby.  Yes I don't like burnoffs much, in WA the old CALM  organisation as it was know thenn( Conservation adn Land Management) used to do big burns..haldf the time they got out of control and the other half they just killed heaps of wildlife.

Thanks every one for your interest :)
