So how did you find Jawbone as a location for bird pics? Did you manage to sight the musk duck or perhaps the blue billed ducks that hang out there?
A lovely pic by the way which I suspect was taken around the edges of the ponds on the Williamstown side of Jawbone where the pelicans and ibis tend to roost.
I find every time we go there, as we do when we don't want to drive too far, the water level has changed, and so have the birds. I haven't seen any musk ducks there, because we look out for the dotterels. The Pelicans sit mostly on the huge lights where we park the car. The plover was in the pond next to where the Ibis sit on the small island. Other than that there isn't a lot to see, you find some Red-kneed Dotterels and a few Stints. But if you have a look at the vegetation around the lakes, you find lots of small birds. We mainly go there because it's a nice walk, only one problem, on weekends you have to dodge the fast bycicles.
I get the feeling it's well looked after, there is a group of friends.
Expect white faced chats near the board walk, also sand pipers. Head towards Altona and there's a good chance of spotting the musk and blue billed ducks. Avocets and quail are occassionally hanging out near the small salt pan area closest to the refinery.
Guess I have to have a closer look. Just had a look at some photos I took there, there was also a White-faced Heron. Might go there again tomorrow, only have half a day to do anything Thanks Johnno
They are common. I have even seen some on the edge of Albert Park Lake (where the F1 races are held), in the City of Melbourne. But that might have been unusual, that day there were also lots of Black-winged Stilts there. But, yes they are in many places around here.
They're a striking bird still, really lovely. I've never seen one before so thanks for sharing those lovely shots M-L. No doubt, not seeing them here is my own fault I need to wander into some different habitats more often than I have lately I think.

What a cutie!

Striking markings and colouration on the head, lovely bird. Are they common where you are M-L?
