I'm pretty sure I saw a Brahminy Kite today - my first. It was pretty impressive! There was what looked like a big mud ball in the branches and I wondered if it might be the nest or am I completely off? Bird Finder didn't list it as this far south but it certainly matched the description and photos. I'm at Crescent Head between Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.
No idea on the nest but i have seen them at Port Macquarie so that would make it very likely for your location.

There's nothing really else like them in Aus - if it had a really prominent white head and chest, and brown body/wings, it was a Brahminy! :)
As for territory, Slater's Field Guide for Australian Birds shows them on the coast from mid-Western Australia all the way around the top end, QLD and down to the NSW mid coast.
Slater's also lists their nest as a large stick cup in mangrove or paperbark. Not sure without a pic but the mud ball sounds more like an ant or termite colony up in the tree.

Seems like my post didn't work.
I have Brahminy Kite pics from the lighthouse at Port Macquarie

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
The creek has lined with paperbarks so that fits. I'll look for him again next weekend.
