Ok I will start with out of town places for you.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, there is an entry fee of $10 but worth it. I have an annual pass but am busy for at least the next 3 weekends, but if you want to wait I would be happy to take you out there.

It is about a 40min drive http://www.tidbinbilla.com.au/

The birds you could encounter there http://www.eremaea.com/SiteSpeciesList.aspx?Site=689

Next is Googong southern end http://svana.org/sjh/stuff/googong_brochure.pdf

You will encounter a lot of Nankeen Krestels and hawks and a wide variety of other birds.

OK close to where you will be staying there is the Jerrabomberra Wetlands and sewage works

Here is a link from a local birding group that should help

Lake Burley Griffin has a lot of water birds and is not far from where you will be staying.

Royal Botanic Gardens is a must visit http://www.anbg.gov.au/

Red Hill is another good walk http://www.tams.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/390592/cnpmapredhill.pdf

If you need any more info just let me know.

OOPS i forgot to mention the Wetlands are dry at the moment, so waterbirds are not there at this time but i did see a pair of Black Sholdered Kites recently.

No worries Peter, glad i could help. I only live about 5 min from where you will be so i could take you on a quick run around town to show you some local spots. But like i said i will be busy the next few weeks as my father is coming to visit (he is 75 so i like to spend as much time as i can with him) and we will be out of town one of the weekends for an engagement party, but yes Pm me and we will sort something out.
