Any ideas for careers that lay in and around birds in Aus? I will probably get an atar of 95+ quite easily, so most uni courses shouldn't be a problem, thanks in advance!

My advice would be not to do it for the money Amateur wink - I ended up in the field because I love it.

There are lots of science courses out there and some great ecology labs - from there you can focus on different areas:  conservation management, behavioural ecology, physiology etc etc. You need to go on and do Honours at an absolute minimum though - PhD is even better, but academia is a very tough world...

There is an ornithology course that runs out of Charles Sturt uni too - its not a full degree though.

Just a comment: it's an interesting society where greater monetary rewards are offered in jobs which destroy the environment than in jobs which protect or restore the environment. However, I strongly suspect the reverse is the case for non-monetary rewards.

If you do a science degree, in your honours year you do a research project so if you have a passion for a particular topic (like birds) that is a good experience. A science degree can be pretty demanding with all the chemistry and maths you have to learn.

After honours comes the Phd, you can get a grant, I think the APA is about $25 000 pa, you can often get tutoring work as well. The PhD takes 3.5 years, then you apple for a post doc which pays pretty well, but usually only a few years. Eventually you might get a permanent teaching or research position.
