Carnaby's Cockatoo

I recently wrote to the WA government about the threat of habitat clearance to the future of Carnaby's Cockatoo. The response from the Minister for the Environment included the notion that there are a number of threats to this species including the birds' "highly mobile nature".

This is the first time I've heard of such an idea. I would have thought that if the species wasn't mobile in order to reach declining food sources it would then be under even greater threat than it is now.

I'm interested in members' thoughts on this, particularly those who live in WA.

Nomadic tendencies of birds is an asset rather than a threat to the survival of the species, especially in a place as inhospitable as WA. Regardless, if there is an acknowledgement of a number of threats to the species, isn't that reason enough to at least reduce that list by 1 and not further clear their habitat? Especially since it is a factor we can easily control.

I couldn't agree more, Amateur. The bureaucratic blah with which the letter was filled didn't reassure me that the Carnaby's Cockatoo habitat would be preserved.
