Cat control in Tasmania

Hopefully our government follows through on the proposals listed in this article, the Mercury, Hobart.

http://www.themercury.com.au/news/tasmania/tasmanian-government-releases-draft-plan-to-avert-a-feline-catastrophe/news-story/80999d8498d6c1cc424ce045fb0452a2

Interestingly "Mr Rockliff said the plan recognised the statewide eradication of feral cats was not feasible"

Also following on from a point Jason made in another thread - “A single pair of cats can produce over seven years as many as 420,000 cats, that will give you some idea of what we are talking about, it is a very serious problem,” he said."

It's also interesting that while we stand by as developers & feral animals send into extinction our native fauna people like Mr Rockcliffe say that's it's not feasible to eradicate feral cats. Hmmmm. Me thinks Mr Rockcliffe is too comfortable watching MKR (My Kitten Rules).

In a recent trip to NZ one can't help but notice the national trapping programme for stoaks and possums.  A country of 4.5 million, tourism is now their biggerst money earner, and it seems the Govenment takes very seriously trying to keep what native animlas they have left from the clutchs of extinction.  They, like us have cleared vast amounts of land; it's hard to imagine what 200 years ago looked like, but at least they have the forsight to chuck some big money at trying to make it better.

But it could be much so easier in this counrty.  Bring in the proposed changes, and when the minority do not desex their cat they can ruin it for everone, and cat ownership can be banned.  Seems like the Australian way of dealing with things these days.  lol

We're pushing the proverbial up hill in restoring our natural environment when the Environment Minister needs a phone call to tell him the Great Barrier Reef is in serious trouble.
