Colour of the eyes

Having a look at the Pacific Gull’s white eyes, makes me ask the question:

Why do birds have different eye colours?

I noticed that most of the birds out at sea have those bright , white eyes. Does the eye colour have something to do with the amount of light being absorbed ? Do they have those eyes to compensate for the bright glare on the surface of the water?

So does that also mean, birds in dense forests or active at night would have dark eyes, and Gulls and other seabirds would therefore have those ice coloured white eyes?

What are your thoughts on this?

..and could the Bush Thick-knee have those big brightly coloured eyes, because it lives in open country or near beaches, to absorb the sunlight?

This link has some interesting information but I was thinking of ravens whose eyes change colour from brown to silver as they mature. Very interesting topic M-L.

ETA: Stunning photos as always!

I recently had my eyes tested and the optometrist said that people with a lighter coloured iris tend to pick up more glare than people with a darker iris... But in relation to your observations, that doesn't make sense. I suppose that birds might have different eye structures, but I wouldn't think it would differ that much as to the way the eye functions... An interesting research topic.

You might want to read what Alison has given us a link to? Bird's eyes are different to ours.
