Hello everyone,

I took this photo at hte Boondal wetlands in Brisbane. I'm pretty sure that it is a Mangrove Gerygone; however, pretty sure is not sure enough laugh So I was wondering if anyone could confirm it for me? Thanks heaps smiley

Although I've never seen one, I'd agree with Mangrove Gerygone. One of the best ways of telling is by song, as they differ quite sginificantly.

I agree with everything that Owl of Kedumba said.

Could be Mangrove or Brown Gerygone - what points did you use to exclude Brown?

Hi Peter,

The local race(southern sub-species richmondi) of the Brown Gerygone have a noticeably greyer face which contrasts more with the browner crown & hind-neck, compared to Mangrove Gerygone where the facial area below & behind the eye blends in more with rest of the upperparts. Also on Brown Gerygone there tends to be less obvious cut-off of the eye-brow behind the eye, i.e. the eye-brow sort of merges in with the rest of the face behind the eye.

I didn't actually hear it singsmiley The thing that made me think 'Mangrove Gerygone', was the fact that there were heaps of mangroves a short distance from where I took the photo. Also, after visiting the Boondal Wetlands we went and visited another wetlands (though for the life of me I can't remember the name!) It wasn't too far away ( 30 min?). And while we were there we heard and saw Mangrove gerygones.

Now you ask why couldn't I identify it myself? Well, (1) I have never seen a Brown Gerygone (2) I didn't hear it sing, so I couldn't be sure it was the same bird as the one seen at the other wetlands (3) Someone in the group (I was with some field naturalists, none of them birdos though) thought they saw a Brown Gerygone on the non-mangrove side of the reserve in the carpark.

I hope that I haven't made it more confusing, thanks so much for your help so far guyssmiley

P.S. Reflex, did you see any Mangrove Gerygones when you were there? laugh

G'day Elsie,

I've been there quite a few times now and haven't managed to capture one of these there but I see them regularly at the Nudgee Beach boardwalk through the mangroves which is quite close by. They are very quick but don't seem too bothered about being seen.

It's a hard one but I'm tempted to say Mangrove Gerygone over Brown because of the white throat. Owl is usually pretty good on the ID's. We just need Zosterops to have a look in.wink

Thanks Reflex! I will put it down as a Mangrove Gerygone, as I was in Brisbane again yesterday (in Lota) and saw some of the little birds themselvessmiley
