Lovely photo kevinj , looks like you got closer than me, as I managed to get a couple of shots of one the other day when I was leaving Bibra Lake here in W.A. I find they really are shy birds aren't they? You captured their beautiful colours and markings as well.
Always exciting & fun (for me anyway) getting a new photography toy - I mean, vital piece of equipment Looks like you are having fun breaking-in that new Sigma wonderfully Kevin, with a slew of spectacular shots. Gorgeous birds.
They are common in Sydney, and I don't find them shy at all, albeit these are ones in parks that will come very close indeed. You have captured all their delicate wing colourations very well.

Thak you, they are common here as well, mostly in open areas away from crowds.I have taken many images of these birds and missed the wing colour, crawling on my belly in the wet grass was worth it when I saw the result.
Oh I like these pigeons and I like their cousins the spinifex pigeons even more. I wish we had more of these around in Sydney instead of those feral doves and pigeons.
For Australian birds, natives=life, exotics=death, so do them a favour and go plant some natives and save their lives.

They're everywhere in Brisbane.
We used to call them top knots when I was a kid, and I never really got an explanation why. Haven't seen a real Top Knot though.
Still, the humble Crested Pigeon is quite a lovely bird.
I call Crested Pigons "Elvis Pigeons" owing to there head plumage,

I also used to call them Top Knot Pigeon, and many people still do.
It is hard to get a good pic of them as they are usually very high in a tree, but here is a pic at Eungella, Qld on 29/9/13
