Thanks all,
Sparrow, on reread I see that I could have been a bit clearer. The Shrike was a first but I have seen the other birds before this.Have had a hat trick in the Gawler Ranges though.☺
My mistake ,we all enjoy seeing a new bird and your photos are a lot better than any of the CST shots I have ,you put up so many great photos I must have assumed you got the new ones 3 at a time ,I must visit the Gawler Ranges going by your photos looks like my kind of place !
It's wonderful to learn that both the Crested Shrike-tit & the Golden Whistler are now at the Lataringa Wetlands, Rick. The Mt Barker Council has certainly done some great ecological restoration there.
Was talking to a regular there and he said that bird numbers were a bit down in his opinion!!!
Pink Eared,Freckled ducks,Australasian Shovelers,Night Herons +++++? Would love to see it when numbers are up He also showed me some photos of Boobook Owls taken from there some time ago.
Sparrow,
Gawler Ranges is just fantastic and have only touched the surface there. Next time I go (maybe next weekend for two days depending on work) I will be having a look at the thicker Mallee areas for maybe a Mallee Fowl.
When I got my first bird reference book called Birds of the Greater South West by Simon J Nevill, I knew very little about birds so I looked through the book at all the birds and their photos and picked out my favourites in which would be a dream to photograph.
They were the Bush Stone Curlew, Australian Pratincole and the Ground Cuckoo Shrike ( all of which I still have not been able to photograph yet) anyway I went on my way and started to snap shots at as many birds as I could and mark them off in my book as I went.
Seeing I was running out of the common birds in my immediate area to find and photogragh I had to move onto the not so common ones and I must say the Feckled Duck was a challenge for me it took me some time and effort to photograph that shy beauty. I am sure anyone on that lake that day would have been scared looking at the crazy bird lady confused whether to scream ,cry, or dance with such excitment.
So I had to choose my next challenge out of the book to find and photograph and it was the Crested Strike-tit that caught my eye .
Unfortunately I still haven't managed to find one , so you can imagine my jealous rage when I saw your post, outstanding photos by the way , just look at that crest.
Great story Kerry. No one was more surprised than me to come across the CST,was flitting around for about twenty seconds then gone.
Was so very lucky with the Freckled, have been chasing a decent shot for ages but the few that I have seen have always been so far away. This one appeared from nowhere and just cruised past.
Had to climb a tree for the Heron to get above the reeds I also get some very funny looks.
Wondiful photos of a beautiful bird
Well done
Great shots of a very elusive little bird ,allways nice to see somethng new but a hattrick would have to be a buzz.
Lovely photos, Rick!
Cheers

Between the three shots you got all the relevant detail. And you are getting seriously eyeballed in the second shot.

That Shrike-Tit is sure a funky little dude with a cool hairdo.
Rick, I mispoke (as politicians say when they've been caught lying) when I said Lataringa Wetlands. It is, as you wrote, Laratinga Wetlands. Sorry.
