I went for a walk at Daisy Hill forest yesterday, as I felt the need to get out and about after a few weeks of not having the energy to do so. Was pleased to find the birds waiting for me.
Was particularly interested to see male Variegated Fairywrens in full non-breeding colours, and on the change.
The little Lewin's Honeyeater was particularly curious about me. It was hopping about gobbling up spiders, but would check me out every now and then.
Was also a pleasant surprise to spot a Pacific Baza treehopping around the place.
Whoops, realised I forgot someone. This feller was flitting around the place calling somewhat plaintively.
Great variety of birds .... The honeyeater certainly was curious about you
Doesn't the male Variegated Wren look gorgeous in the changing into non-breeding colours? Almost as if he's been painted with a brush.

Yeah, it's the first time I think I've really seen them on the change in person.
He was probably thinking "Don't stare at me while I'm trying to change! Perv!"
Beautiful, windshear - how lucky you are to see even more Pacific Bazas - I've only seen one once.
Cheers

Lovely windshear. You always get such a spectacular variety at Daisy Hill it seems. Glad you sound like you're on the mend too!

Lovely to see your enthusiasm for taking these pretty pics.
FYI, the baza is a juvenile bird. Cute as. :)
Thanks guys.
Canonguy - Yeah, I figured it was - it still was getting the hang of the landing on branches bit of flying. :) Bazas have been pretty good for me in the last 6 months.
Very nice, thank you!
We've not been to daisy Hill yet, but it's on "the list" .... actually it's on the very long list ....
The Lewin's is a very beautiful bird, great shot. Thanks
Hey Windshear great shots you have here, I especially like the Pacific Baza. Living in Redland Bay not that far from you I can honestly say I've never seen one of these birds in our area but I sure hope their here. Look forward to spotting one soon.
Great work
Cheers.
Dennis - Not exactly down your way, but in the generalish direction - I was thrilled to follow the lives (for a little while anyway) of a pair of Bazas nesting at Sandy Camp Road Wetlands at Wynnum - they raised three littlies, and they all took flight after Christmas. So they're definitely around at different times of the year, I guess. (have posted a couple of threads about them previously)
While I love all birds, raptors are really very impressive.
I keep an eye on the lists on eBird (used to be Eremaea) to see what's been spotted around the place.
Timrob - I have a long list too, heh. Daisy Hill is about 10 minutes drive from my house, so it's my "go to" place when I feel like birding/bushwalking, but can't be bothered driving for an hour.
Rick N - I got very fortunate with this little one, usually they play hide and seek with me, but this one played it up for the camera.
Nice variety of birds there Windshear... I thought you must have meant daisy Hill south of Brisbane as you seem to get the same culprits as me when I go birding. Haven't been out birding for months now except at the beach, I find it too hot up here in Summer . Lucky you for seeing the Baza too, have only see a pair once and that was in NSW

Thanks, and yep, it's that one.
There are some nice places to go, if you have access to a car - up at Mt Glorious/Mt Nebo is usually pleasant, shady under the rainforest, and easy walking for the most part. Lots of birds too. :)
