Diamond Firetail

Had to make a quick trip to Mudgee so went via Mt Tomah and the Capertee Valley again. I was lucky to have my second only sighting of a Southern Whiteface. but this was the highlight... my first Diamond Firetail.

Great find Sue! I just had a look in my field guide and see they have actually been sighted as far north as Rockhampton but mainly inland and further south.

My wife is from Mudgee. I might suggest we visit some of her relatives down that way sometime soon.

Great shot and a beautiful new bird to get. I have found that there are often Diamond Firetails where there are Whitefaces- but not the other way round

It is beautiful picture and bird.  would you mind telling me how you get the background like that?

Thanks all, it is a beautiful bird. The white stands out as does the size against the Zebra and Double-bar finches. I was surprised when it landed next to me.

Elizabeth, this was taken with a Nikkor 400mm telephoto lens at f5.6 (1/1250 sec and ISO 220). The depth of field made the background a blur of colour with only the bird and the log close to me in focus. The focus is a bit soft on the bird's eye but I can live with that. It was good luck as I have been playing with lenses and settings and trying to get the set-up right.

The main thing is to be out and about with the camera and keep taking pictures. Mind you the camera and lens seems to be heavier these days! Enjoy yourself.

I will be revisiting this spot when I have more time as I discovered a water source nearby which explains the number of different birds. Plum-head finches, Restless Flycatchers and a Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater also appeared along this stretch of the Glen Alice road.
