I don't know if you have heard of the stork in Egypt that was arrested, and put behind bars, as superstitions lead it to be accused of "spying". Actually, the bird had a satelite tracker on its back.

Birds have always been seen as the messengers of the Gods. In Greek and Roman Antiquities, but even earlier ,the Maya saw the bird as a messenger. Well worth reading about History.
Pigeons were always used in wars, to carry messages with informations to fighting soldiers.
(that's also where the saying:don't shoot the messenger comes from
