Duck or goose?

Does anyone know what this is? Can't find it on the bird finder. Seen at Lysterfield Lake Park yesterday. It wouldn't stand up while I was there so could only get it sitting.  A friend of mine saw it a couple of weeks ago and told me about it.

Hi kathie, I think your bird is a Muscovy duck (domestic breed) They are very heavy birds that don't fly well and even though they are a duck they are more "goose" like.

Cheers, Jackiewink

Thanks, they don't appear on the bird database at all which explains why I couldn't find it. Yes, I couldn't make up my mind if it was a duck or goose, definitely a very heavy set bird.  I suspect another escapee, like the white peacock I saw there some weeks ago. Someone is losing their pets to the park it would seem.

No worries Kathie ;0) You might find that people are actually dumping unwanted birds there, it happens alot. Could you ring council to catch the bird? Are there native ducks there?

Yes, there are native ducks there, plus a musk duck that hangs around too.  The park rangers are there every week day and there's a bird spotting group that visits once a month. So they're sure to know the duck is there.
