I'm hoping I don't embarrass myself too much by requesting this identification, because this call is strange enough that I guess it could be something other than a bird.
I've heard it only first thing in the morning, and it has come from the areas of bushland and sub-tropical rainforest near the house. Frankly it sounds like someone strangling a cat.

I have edited the audio to enhance the call, plus shortened the interval between calls, which was originally 10-12 seconds.
Any advice on what it might be?
Strangely enough, zambuck, your strangled cat description is accurate - I'm pretty sure that's a green catbird.
They tend to inhabit rainforest areas, so that fits well with your description of sub-tropical rainforest next door.
They're a little bit secretive, so may be hard to spot.
