The photos are crappy but I don't care
After four days of searching for no result it all came down to one last look this morning, before the forecast rain came and we had to head home. The gods smiled on me and I found my first Mallee Emu Wren, two incredibly secretive birds moving like ghosts from spinifex clump to clump. To say I was happy is an understatement.
Given its rarity, these are wonderful shots, Rick. The Malle Emu-wren is incredibly vulnerable to extinction because of the contraction & fragmentation of its habitat in a very limited area. This means that an extensive fire or two will put it right on the knife edge ("tipping point" is the latest jargon) if not wipe it out altogether. I believe there is a plan or talk of a plan to restore some of its habitat but I don't know the details.
Rick, I'm confident the Murraylands Regional Ecologist with the SA Department of Environment (or whatever it's called this week) on 08 8595 2111 will be excited to learn of your sighting.
Great reward for your perseverance Rick .... great photos through the grass, they hint at how secretive and hard to find they are.
Congrats Rick.
Feels good to get an ellusive bird.

Great find! Almost as good as a Golden-Headed Cisticola?

Nice photos Rick and a great find.
Hopefully these little guys will be around long enough for me to be able to see their beauty.
